HWY 1 – Pacific Coast Hwy – South
Probably one of the most famous roads in all of California, this stretch of road is best enjoyed north of Morrow Bay through Big Sur, or the stretch that follows the coastline just north of Los Angeles(1).

UPDATE:
Edited to reflect the southern section of HWY 1. There is now a page for the northern section of HWY 1 to compliment this page.
I would have to disagree on the comment:
” this road is best enjoyed north of Morrow Bay through Big Sur, or the stretch that follows the coastline just north of Los Angeles.
Just south of Carmel to Morro Bay is the better part of the southern portion of the PCH, but the PCH North of San Francisco is longer, twistier, less traveled, more scenic, and has many more opportunities for side road excursions. I am biased, I grew up riding from SF to Oregon on HWY 1, but I ride south a lot as well and there is really no comparison.
Good point. I have spent *no* time on PCH above SFO, so I can’t speak to it’s quality, but I trust that you’re very very right. Please feel free to edit the original page and/or add some pix!
I will do a PCH North posting and then we can come and make this specific PCH South. Both have much to offer.
Now we have it split
