Tail Of The Dragon (US Route 129)
Probably the most famous “twisty” road in America. 318 curves in 11 miles. The road lives up to it’s hype, if you get there during the middle of the week and can take it at a decent pace. On the weekends, there are too many visitors and the pace slows down considerably. Additionally, the LEO’s like to spend time along the Dragon, on the weekends. They don’t seem to bother in the middle of the week. Ride the road at a pace you are comfortable with, though. You can easily get in over your abilities, very quickly. The “Tree of Shame” is a good reminder for all those that think they are a Hayden or Rossi. Also, watch out for large trucks. The road is open to all traffic and tractor trailers take up the entire road width (as in both lanes), when going around most of the turns.
